Re: [papercreters] Papercrete chicken house stream of conciousness

Chicken poop is great compost, and is much easier to collect and move to the composting location if extra water is not added.  If the chicken house has sufficient ventilation it dries quickly to a light pebbly mix which is easy to handle.  A light layer of sawdust on the floor prevents it from sticking.

I don't want fc walls.  The goal is to test my technique for my (human) house.  I want to cover the roof because I will be covering it on my house and the pumphouse.  For the house I will be using ferrocement, but don't want to go to that effort for the chicken house.  Maybe for the pump house . . . .

I will be casting the roof separately and hinging it to the chicken house so I can provide additional ventilation in the summer by propping the roof open a few inches on the upper edge.  I've already designed the opening/propping lever and how to incorporate it into the construction.  I'll have to think a bit on the hinging mechanism.  Maybe a pipe inside a pipe.  Cut a wide slot in the bigger pipe, weld the smaller pipe to a mounting bracket, feed the smaller pipe into the larger pipe . . . that would work pretty handily.  Hmmm . . . Maybe two short chunks of big pipe and two short chunks of smaller pipe on u-brackets.  Embed the bigger pipes into the pour for the roof right against the outside edges so the end of the pipe is exposed.  Feed the u-bracketed pipes into the slots, left the roof into place and fasten the u-bracket over the wall . . .  . . . Maybe form a convex curve in the roof where it sits on the walls and mold the top of the walls in a matching curve so when the roof sets down on the walls the curves mate and hold the roof in the correct position.  Hmmm . . . Maybe a 45 degree slot would be easier . . . Hmmm.

Hi Elf, a thin FC floor and walls should fit the bill without overlays which trap bacteria and mold and bugs which are hard to clean.  Smooth cement on the other hand is easy, and by sloping the floor it can be hosed out as well.  An FC roof needs no other toping as well.  Bill on the FC group stamped his to look like slate tiles.
