[papercreters] Re: alternative cob book?

You might want to check out the books titled: "The Art of Natural
Building" New Society Publishing: "The Hand Sculpted House" by Jaunto
Evans.

Also I recommend reading "SOLVIVA" by Anna Eddy..... "The Long
Emergency" Kunstler......... "Litle House on a Small Planet" by Shay
Salomon

[papercreters] Papercrete & Magnesium Cement

Uwe,

Your interest in magesium cement as a substitute for portland cement is something I share, both in ferrocement and in papercrete.  I have not yet had an opportunity to do the requisite experimenting to draw any final conclusions, but here are a few facts I have surmised:

1. There are a variety of cements made from magnesia, in these three varieties: magnesium oxychloride cement, magnesium oxysulfate cement, and magnesium phosphate cement.  Each having their own pros and cons.

2. A primary benefit of magnesium cements is that they are produced at a far lower temperature than portland cement, and therefore far less CO2 is released into the atmosphere in the production.  Thus, a more "green" product.  If a papercrete mix could be devised using a magnesium cement, it would probably result in a broader interest in the green building field.

3. Some of the down sides of magnesium cements have been the reason for their lack of wide-spread acceptance and use.  Some are more vulnerable to water and chemical deterioration, and some will leach magnesium.

4. Magnesium cements that I've read about have a very quick set time, which seriously limits batch sizes and workability.  For example, I've heard that Grancrete, which is a magesium cement-based product, will set in something like 20 minutes, a time that can be perhaps doubled with retarders, but still a very fast set time.  I certainly wouldn't want to be caught with a 200 gallon tank partially empty and hard as a rock...

5. Magnesium cements are more expensive, because they aren't produced in the same scale of volume that portland cement is produced.

6. Successful magnesium cement mix designs are more difficult to achieve, are often the basis of proprietary products, and are thus more closely guarded (= "secrets").

I imagine that there is a successful magesium cement-based papercrete, and I think it would have at least three positive qualities:
- quicker setting and drying, possibly less shrinkage;
- greener, less CO2 created in the production; and
- harder, greater compressive strength.

If anyone can further enlighten me on any reasons why magnesium cement would not work in a papercrete mix, or if someone has some experience with magnesium cement papercrete mix design, I would be very interested.  Or, do you know of a magnesium cement expert who might help us design a magnesium cement papercrete mix?

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to when I'll have adequate time and space for the requisite experimentation...

Happy holidays,

Eric Randall

[papercreters] Bagged BENTONITE clay in Seattle area

GOT THIS EMAIL ON THE COB LIST- WANTED TO SHARE IT WITH THE GROOUPS FOR

Available in Seattle, WA:

BAGS OF BENTONITE CLAY AVAILABLE. FREE. APPROX 200 50-LB BAGS. APPROX

100-LB BAGS. PICK UP AT MACMILLAN-PIPER, 150 S. HORTON ST., SEATTLE, WA
98134. SEE BRIAN OR TAMI. PHONE 206-340-2851.

If anyone is even moderately intersted, this is good clay for
plastering and
other projects. Maybe a cob oven?

I know I went on about this two weeks ago, but I went down and picked
up a
nice dry 50 lb bag and it was still wrapped in plastic on the pallet.

The company used it in well drilling...so it isn't the highest grade
stuff
(food grade), but it is regular bentonite. I think they were getting
low on
the 50 lb bags, but they had lots of 100 lb bags.

Hi Eric,

You seem surprisingly familiar with my area being from Iowa. I do have a well that brings up 108F mineral water.

You bring up some good points about sand. I have been using large quantities of sand for these reasons:

- strengthen the mix
- reduce portland cement - portland issues -  (cost, transportation, storage, carbon)
- reduce flammability
- reduce dry time
- reduce costs

The structures I am building are small and the insulation is thick enough at 12" that I don't mind giving up a little R-value.

[papercreters] How to Pump Papercrete - Sand in Mix

Hi Mikey,

Thanks for your sharing of your papercrete adventures in your posts, blog, and videos -- inspirational!

I always have wanted to visit Truth or Consequences -- anyplace with a name like this has got to be interesting and have interesting edges.  With Virgin Galactic spaceport nearby, and hot springs -- are you luck enough to have a well over  one of the famous T or C hot springs?  And T or C has Elephant Butte Lake State Park nearby.  A lot going on in your corner of New Mexico. Hopefully you'll have a papercrete place for me to sleep by the time I'm next making a pilgrimage out west!

I did want to ask about your mix.  I'm puzzled why you would use so much sand in a mix that is designed as an insulating core between two ferrocement shells.  Looks like you don't need the sand for structural reasons, with FC skins, I would think flame resistance isn't the reason.  Doesn't seem like shrinkage would be an issue since you'll be able to fairly easily get the FC through your outer skins.  Is it to satisfy the code folks?

Would you be so kind as to share your thinking?

Thanks much!

[papercreters] Call for Articles - TLS' Women in SB & NB Issue

This email was sent out a while back - and I have received some
great responses, but there are many women out there working in
strawbale and natural building who have not sent in their
updated article or new one. So I'm resending this information,
extending the deadline and planning to publish the issue for
distribution early in 2008. This is open to every woman who is
involved in strawbale and other types of natural building.

Here's the information:

The theme of The Last Straw journal's March 2008 issue is The
Women of Strawbale and Natural Building. In addition to
updating the articles about women involved in strawbale and
natural building in 1995 (TLS issue #10/Constructive Women),
we want to feature women who are currently involved now, and
updates on all the women who were featured in TLS#10.

Your involvement can be related to any aspect - workshop
instructor, teaching an online course or in the classroom,
helping with an association, architect, engineer, designer,
design/builder, owner/builder, contractor, subcontractor,
supplier, natural building materials store owner, plasterer, writer,
author, consultant, promoter, realtor, codes official, lender,
insurer...

We want to feature women from around the world, so please
help us get the word out by passing this along to others!

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Photograph - a head shot or a photo showing the person
doing a workshop, teaching a class, working on a project. 300
dpi jpg or tiff format 3x4

2. Brief bio of how you got involved, what you do (planning,
design, construction, plaster, cob, strawbale, light straw clay,
and such)

3. A brief note about projects (types of projects and materials),
involvement in associations, experience teaching or doing
workshops, any other contributions to their particular field of
expertise and work

This issue will take time to bring together, so the sooner you can
send information to us the better.

If you have questions or need more information, just ask.

Thanks. Look forward to hearing from you!

ON THE BOTTOM OF EACH OF MY E MAILS IT EXPLAINS WHY I TYPE IN CAPS  BUT BECAUSE THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ON A LIST THAT THINKS  I'M JUST NOT AWARE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY I DECIDED TO MAKE THIS MY STANDARD REPLY.
I THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST.
ITS NOT  THE  READING THAT IS A PROBLEM.THERE ARE ALL KIND OF WAYS FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED TO ENLARGE TO READ.THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO "UN STICK" LOWER CASE LETTERS WHEN TYPING TO TELL WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN HERE IS AN EXAMPLE WHEN YOU WRITE  R   AND   N   IN LOWER CASE IT LOOKS LIKE THIS   rn THERE ARE MANY LOWER CASE LETTERS THAT "STICK TOGETHER"
UNTIL TECHNOLOGY FIGURES A WAY TO CORRECT THIS , WE WILL HAVE TO WRITE IN CAPS. ACCORDING TO NET MANNERS ITS OK FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED TO TYPE IN CAPS.
THIS IS ONLY CONCESSION WE ASK .PLEASE JUST READ THE CONTENT OR IF IT BOTHERS YOU TO MUCH JUST DELETE

[papercreters] Alternate route to the recipes

Glen Mentgen has copied the current database into a pdf file that he stored at http://www.nurl.us/7ks or http://tinyurl.com/ytrrn2

Thanks, Glen.

Please note that this is not a replacement for the database, it is just easy access to the current (soon to be obsolete) information, for those who are having a problem accessing the recipes. You need the free adobe reader to read it, but that is probably already installed in your browser.

Re: [papercreters] Hello group owner\admin- registration FAQ

Someone needs to approve your registration.  There's a blurb I need to include . . . I'm waiting for someone to get back to me with the blurb.  Hopefully, that will happen today.  Regardless, as soon as I get the blurb, I'll handle approving those who have registered.

[papercreters] Re: Papercreters database

All the userid and password does is allow addition of information to the database.  It doesn't protect any of your financial information or personal information, other than your email address which is available to anyone in the yahoo group.  Because it doesn't protect any sensitive information, there's no point in making it md5 encrypted (appears as asterisks).  If any of the moderators sees something in the database that shouldn't be there, the information will be delete and the offender's access will be cut off, so high security isn't a must.

If you don't have recipes to add to the database, there is no reason for you to register.  You can view any of the recipes by clicking List Recipes and selecting your preferred sorting method.

Hi Elf,
I belong to the Yahoo Papercreters group, and tried to register for the database, but my password didn't get disguised as asterisks.  Didn't want to join for this reason.
Thanks for all the work you are doing.  I know a website in process as people are pushing can be very difficult.  However, I appreciate what you are doing.
Best wishes for a joyous holiday.

Re: [papercreters] PAPERCRETE .NET

I'm assuming you mean "sacred" not "afraid".  Follow this link and you can view the recipes.

You don't need to tell me you registered.  I get a notice whenever someone registers.  One of the moderators will handle approving your registration.  You need to be registered if you want to contribute recipes, but you don't need to be registered to see the recipes.

Okay, it's on the horizontal menu between register and login.  You'll need the email address you signed up with to retrieve your information.

<LOL>  Sounds like you used the wrong userid and/or password.  Because the login script is generic and functions for all clubs and groups with login, you're getting the standard raspberry.  I'm going to add the retrieve login script so you can get your userid and password.  Once it's on the menu, click the link and fill out the information and it will send you your userid and password.  Use the userid and login you receive to login and enter information.

Welcome to the group.

1. Papercrete is absorbent like a sponge unless you seal it after it is cured.
2. Freeze/Thaw doesn't bother papercrete after it cures.
3. You can form papercrete over a negative mold as long as you remove it once it becomes firm enough. It does shrink while curing (depending on formula used), so might crack if left on the mold.
4. Recipes vary according to the use. A basic recipe would be 2:1 paper to cement by weight, and lots of water to mix. The water drains away leaving the cement in the paper fibers. There is a database of recipes (a work in progress) at http://papercreters.net
5. Throw a bucket of latex paint into the mix. That'll seal it. Recycle your drain water into the next batch. Other sealants used include silicon caulk dissolved in turpentine, asphalt emulsion, deck seal, elastomeric paint. The AE is mixed in like the latex, the others applied after curing.
6. Days to weeks, or even months depending on your climate, temperature, humidity, airflow, and of course thickness.
7. Wet papercrete works a lot like clay. Staining is no problem, it's paper after all.

Papercrete is just a fraction of the weight of concrete, depending on the exact formula used. Send us pictures of your experiments  : )

Anyone there who can help me? 5. Can you recommend the use of latex/acrylic admixes as a fortifier or are these a no-no in papercrete? 6. Approximate time of curing (depending on thickness and wetness of course)? 7. Surface treatment - like "wet carving", staining,...?

Re: [papercreters] new member

The only major piece I haven't gotten finished is the edit recipes bit for those who have or will enter recipes.  Everything else is there.  Any future changes will be to presentation, not to content.  Please feel free to enter a recipe if you've got one, any techniques for mixing or applying that recipe, add any projects you have finished or in process for that recipe, etc.  At this point, I need to know what works and what doesn't.  Nothing should be broken, but I need to know anything needing adjusting or reorganizing.  I've written new image upload and edit scripts and will get those included in admin soon.  If you who have recipes, techniques and builds (fences, houses, barns, pig sties, etc.) to add, nag me and I'll get it done sooner.

I respond reasonably well to nagging . . . and am hoping to get back to the project soon.

As I said, it's a work in progress, so not very many there yet. Last I heard the project was awaiting final tweaking before folks start entering recipes in bulk. Another source of recipes would be the archives for this list. Just go to the home page and do a search for "recipe".
