I guess Hank's encountered a lot of resistance to the use of cement-based plasters for strawbale construction from people with environmental concerns (He calls them the "greener then thou" crowd...<grin>).
It's kind of funny, since Hank appears to be as environmentally concerned as anyone I know, but he approaches it in a practical way. If you build a house that's highly insulated, which will be structurally sound for a long time, you'll contribute to the cause by reducing the demands you make for fuel and electricity dramatically, for the lifetime of the house.

In practical terms, not everyone can get a mud hut past their local code enforcement, and not everyone wants to live in one, even if it were a highly efficient structure.

Hank Carr on the Practical Strawbale list has done a lot of research on how "green" a lot of these building materials really are. He's posted several times on his results, you might search the practical-sbc archives for those.
