Re: [papercreters] best rear end to use for tow mixer

There is a seal at the place where the shaft of the differential connects to the yoke. That's probably the source of your oil slick, unless it is just the oil based ink from the paper.

Depending on how your mixer is made, you may need to remove the tank to gain access to the oil fill plug that once was on the front of the differential but now is on top. Once you open it, look inside and see if the oil is nice and black as it should be. Top it off with 90 weight, put the plug back in nice and tight, and reinstall your tank. If the oil is white or brown/cream colored, you have water contamination and should open and drain the differential and give it a good wipe down before refilling it.

Replacing that seal isn't too difficult if you can find the parts. You would probably need to know all the details about the vehicle it came from. If you can get rear ends for four rabbits then it may not be worth the effort. I have a couple of rear ends that were given to me, waiting for the next mixer build, so I'm not worried that mine will eventually break.

This thing about the oil is interesting. I've made about 1000 or more blocks with my tow mixer. Every load has had a slight oil slick on top. Since I am mechanically naive I've asked my assistant/mechanic if we ever need to put more oil in to compensate for what's been lost. He says it's not a significant amount so don't worry about it. So if I want to "top off the heavyweight oil once in a while" how do I go about that? I think this rear end came from an old Ford sedan. I traded 4 rabbits and the guy took the thing out of an old car on his property and loaded it into my truck for me. It's still working fine, although hasn't had much use recently. Thanks for the tip, Judith
