I think many of these tales have a cautionary note to them and there are some lessons to be learned.
1. Make sure of your property lines. in some places if someone uses your land as their's for a certain number of years it becomes their's.
2.Watch out for Zoning regulations and or homeowner associations that may limit what you do on your own property.
3.Get a title search done so you know about any liens or claims on the property. (especially these days with all the foreclosures)
