I am not an expert on the subject of papercrete but I am BB courts.

Don't do it! If you want a recycled court find a school replacing theirs and offer to pull it up cheap or for free. If you need help on how to do it write me.

It would be a good place for a ferro cement roof as well.

[papercreters] Re: Stucco blaster

I paid about 1k for mine, it had some issues but nothing major. If you're handy with tools I can recommend the Smith unit, but like I said parts can be a problem. A better rig with better parts availability will definitely cost more. You might want to rent one rather than buy.

Where did you see a new 100cfm gas compressor for 3k?

May I be the first to coin the name for papercrete made with hops:

"BeerCrete"

just my 2 cents...

[papercreters] Your Message 7553

Are you referring to message 7542 by Charmaine Taylor, if so you'll have
to ask her if it will flex or not. I was only reffering to a patent that
someone had applied for and got, to be able to apply AE to plastic and
then sand to make stucco stick. I believe PC would also stick.

Re: [papercreters] papercrete basketball court?

Hi Red,
In my town, they poured a papercrete long jump running path for the high school.  We are in a dry mountainous climate, little snow, lots of rain in winter.  It has been there three years and looks great.  No cracking or wear and no extra coat over it. An extra coat seems like it would just be more places for cracking and failure.

Good day,
my friend wants to build a basketball court around 40 foot square, 4 inches thick and I suggested we look at papercrete maybe as an interesting experiment. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas what we might want to do. It'll be located in a dry climate so rain isn't much of an issue but there maybe thunderstorms and a small amount of snow in the winter. I am thinking maybe we coat the whole thing at the with a thin layer of concrete or something to make it smooth.

Re: [papercreters] Re: PC inside a bus turned RV?

Here is Sunny Acres' website address: http://www.sunnyacresca.com/   Please have a look, it will warm your heart.  More citizens need to know about the assault against them from latecommers to the area, transplanted from Los Angeles with their big city lifestyle and big city legal tactics.  They want to just mow over the last bit of the original history in SLO by calling it an "eyesore".

They are located on Los Osos Valley Road, just past "town" going west, and before reaching Foothill Road, on the north side.  Their land extends to the last rear portion of Laguna Lake and may actually touch the base of Madonna Mountain.  That should give you a visual clue.  That Jewish temple was actually part of the DeVaul ranch land but was sold off some years ago so Dan DeVaul would have some living expenses paid for in his later years.

Sunny Acres is on Los Osos Valley Rd just past the shopping center and tract housing and before Foothill Rd. As you travel toward Los Osos it is on the right. There are old cars, half wine barrels and buildings. My landlady's son use to bring outdated food by for her and sometimes it was a lot so I would take it out there, they were so grateful and nice. It's really ashame that the local goverment has given them such a hard time as these people really do try and give down and out men a place to live and structure to work.

[papercreters] papercrete basketball court?

Good day,
my friend wants to build a basketball court around 40 foot square, 4 inches thick and I suggested we look at papercrete maybe as an interesting experiment.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
Conrad

I live close to a lake and have access to the water. I was wondering about any problems with using lake water in the mix. Anyone know of any?

Perry, no I never did contact Sunny Acres but it's a good idea to ask if they would save one of the rear ends. If you have the time sometime we could go out together to talk with them. Ev

[papercreters] mold/mildew resistant

I came across this information doing cancer research and a thought hit me. If plant material is already mold/mildew resistant would not these same properties carry over into any papercrete application?

Germplasm
Reported from the Eurosiberian Center of Diversity, hops, or cvs thereof, is reported to tolerate bacteria, disease, frost, fungi, high pH, insects, low pH, mildew, mycobacteria, viruses, and wilt (Duke, 1978). Many varieties are available.

http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/duke_energy/Humulus_lupulus.html

It was also my thinking that it the plant fiber was soaked first the same as the paper. There would be an even distribution of the mold/mildew resistant properties to the PC project.

If anyone has any input or information please give your two cents worth.

Jeanne

Sorry Bob, again, it's early and my brain isnt working (pre coffee) are you saying that if I add nylon netting or the bag of stuff you quoted to paper and water that it will be flexible enough for a bus?

[papercreters] Re update

Hi everyone just thought id let you know how we are progressing. The press is done and have made a drain off hopper to get it into the press hopper. We were going to press last weekend but we got 6in snow and stayed till thursday,we will do a mix today after we clean a spot in the yard and dig a hole to collect the waste water to reuse. We have a friend that owns a cement co and his silo is damaged and wants it empied he gave us 1200 lbs fly ash and said we can use one of the cement trucks if we want ,just come and get one.We are looking for one more auger for the drain off hopper,we have riged the hopper to lift with the bobcat for now,is a larger size bobcat so we hope it wont be to heavy to lift up that high.Well thats it for now have a great weekend

Re: [papercreters] Re: Stucco blaster

From what Dave said I went looking for a Smith 100 and found some for sale here:
http://www.rushequipmentinc.com/pages/misc/misc-01.html
However, @ $3000.00 one could get a new industrial compressor with a gas engine with similar output.

[papercreters] Re: Stucco blaster

Just happened to drop by and thought I should chime in...

I'm currently having good results using a Graco 1030 texture sprayer, can't use their gun because it clogs up but you can make a simple PVC gun and then their pump and hose will work. (See pics section for gun image)

I'm also using a Smith 100 air compressor, which unfortunately is obsolete so parts have to be scrounged or made, but the compressor uses a Ford 302 engine with half the engine providing power and the other half making air pressure. The air side of the compressor was shot when I bought it but after I figured out how it worked it was easy to fix, just needed some new o-rings and a set of springs, the parts cost a grand total of $10 I think. Smith made their own cylinder head for the compressor side, and since the only parts that seem like they might fail are readily available I am going to keep it for now. It will do 100 CFM which is about the minimum for continuous spraying with the Graco pump. When it's going well, the compressor cycles down to idle, but only barely.

If anyone wants to come see the setup shoot me an email, I'm just north and east of Dallas TX.

Re: [papercreters] Re: PC inside a bus turned RV?

Evelyn and I talked a bit some months ago about the possibility of approaching Sunny Acres with the idea of getting them set up to make papercrete bricks.  For one, to rebuild the barn that that city coucil woman says is an eyesore and is actively pursuing to erradicate Sunny Acres from existence practically.  Yet the city relies on Sunny Acres with the homeless situation around these parts.  Ohhhhhhhh, I call her a woman but really I've got a different word in mind that starts with a letter B.  She lives up on the hill looking down on Sunny Acres in her nice fancy million dollar house that was built decades after Sunny Acres became Sunny Acres.

It looks like the city council has won Act II on this assault against the land owner.  Sunny Acres is required to move all the vehicles off the site that are not currently registered or operative or both.  Something like that.  So, I'm not sure if they have done so already or not, but someone should tell them to remove one of the rear ends on one of those trucks or busses and save it for the purpose of making a papercrete mixer... that is if they want to explore the papercrete thing.  Evelyn did you happen to get ahold of the site manager?  I lost her phone number and I'm just always so busy during the day at work that I can't stop by even though I only live a block or two away.

Anyway, we live in "green" California here on the Central Coast, so it might be good to coordinate somewhat, and see about approaching building and planning and get the process rolling to establish papercrete as a building medium.  Even if it's "slow growth" around here, it can't hurt to further the cause.  If I owned vacant land, around these parts, I'd do it.  I've been looking at property in California Valley since it's cheeper, but really the good property there is still expensive and it is just really far from town that it's kept me from putting a whole lot of energy into things.  Maybe if I was close to retiring, I'd give it another thought.  Anyway.. lest I continue rambling, that's all for now..

RE: [papercreters] Re: Stucco blaster/ Air Compressor

Right, the steel plate would allow for better plumbing than the spark plug holes.  The average bigger displacement pistons would have to work pretty hard to squeeze all that air in and out that little hole.

Another way to rig multiple cylinder engines with fuel injection is to block of injectors on cylinders opposite of ones that can be left to run the others, and run separate exhaust headers for the dead cylinders for filling tanks or manifolded to sprayer supply.  Spark holes could be drilled oversize and fitted with check valves for additional exhaust and compression cycle relief.

Cooling water from drive engine or cylinders should add even more heat to your storage tank.  Hook up an alternator to charge your battery banks and electrolyzers as well.

Yeah, that's pretty much plan A, not as efficient as using the manifolds but a lot easier to do. I have a friend who is a good mechanic, vs. me under a shade tree, and I'll definitely get with him before I start turning bolts. The engine I plan to convert has a timing chain on sprockets but no, changing sprockets would not do it right. Maybe a new head made from plate steel with separate check valves for in and out, with the out to a manifold. Probably would need some cooling fins too, but maybe the water jacket would take care of it. Plus I could use my heat storage tank for my hydronic floor to cool the compressor if I'm using it at home.

I sure wish I could get my hands on one of those newfangled Mustang modular engines with electronic valve timing, among other nice tricks. But then that would cost a lot more than just buying a large compressor : (

[papercreters] a different recipe PC on bus- & Bob said

Bob wrote--- from a patent?

A liquid coal tar or asphalt emulsion is put on a plastic item. The
emulsion may be sprayed on or brushed on the item. If the surface is
flat, the emulsion may be rolled on.

Immediately after the emulsion is applied to the surface of the plastic
item, the item is sprayed with sand, or rolled in sand, or has sand hand
thrown onto it. As the emulsion dries, the sand sticks to it. This makes
a perfect base on which to apply the wet stucco.

++++++++++++++++++++

APPLYING AE AND EMBEDDING  NETTING OR Other  FIBER MESH IS what I suggested, and what I have done to steel and metal  surfaces  and dry flat particleboard.  I took a metal  clotheswasher drum and coated it this way.

By Using a lime and paper  plaster mix- with just fine nylon fibers ( no sand or cement)  - I was able to get the "lime-papercrete" to stick very well to the steel drum I made into a   flower planter.  the fiber netting  will hold materials also without the weight of the sand. also a cup of clean sand is used in primer paint on walls for the  new "natural clay paints" to give the wall tooth to hold the  clay/lime paints or plasters.

I built up a new layer to a final coat, that is still holing up after 4 years in all weather outside. the   liquid laundry bluing I used as a pigment has faded away ( naturally) since it is NOT actually a color at all.  but the blue color itgave as new was fantastic.

Lastly since the metal is flexing, have a fiber mesh tape which WILL flex since it is soft, and having the tiny  nylon fibers in the cross meshing action in any plaster  will also allow for flex and  impovement without cracking.

The japanese have gone far in a this new  tiny  PVA fiver ( not nylon ) that actually replaces rebar as the tensile strength, thousands of crisscrossed  fibers in their cement slabs are holding together well.

look ay their site. I bought a big bag of this stuff and use it in all my mixes as an extra boost. you can buy it $120 approx for a 40 lb sack.,

because of the papercontent in regular papercrete I do not know how much it OULD  ADD, but  I also dont see it as a  hinde3raqnce in any way sioce it is

AE is a great sticky starting point

I will see if I can upload the staqrt to finish steel frum project to the photo file

Change the timing gears so the cam revolves once every time the crankshaft revolves once.

A machine shop, but that's not the plan. The spark plug hole is available, so the existing valves will be disabled to stay closed all the time. Then new valves will be attached at the spark plug holes. An alternative method would be to replace the head with a custom head.

This is all in the planning stage, so I don't have any details for you...

It's about 90% there before you even start, mostly a matter of changing the valves so you get air intake every time the pistons go down, and compressed air out on each up stroke. The cylinders and pistons, and crankshaft are already fine, and there is even an oil pump built in to keep it lubricated. You can leave all the extra stuff  that makes an engine run hanging on it, or you can strip all that unnecessary stuff off. You do have to add a power source like another engine to drive your new compressor.

I know of a guy in TN who made an old VW engine run on two cylinders and used the other two as a compressor with custom valves. He even left it in the VW body so he could drive it (slowly) around his place to wherever he needed compressed air.

An even simpler solution that I haven't seen in years - I used to have a handy device that would screw into a spark plug hole, and had a valve feeding a hose that could be used to fill a tire. Looking back, I never worried much about the fact that I was filling tires with explosive gasoline vapor and air! The six cylinder engine that I had then worked fine on five cylinders, and I imagine if one picked the right cylinders then half them could be used for compression while the engine ran on the other half.

It's mostly a matter of having the right tools, followed of course by knowing how to use them without wasting your materials or your body. In the end you sometimes find that you spent as much as buying a commercial version but you have the fun of doing it, and the knowledge of how well it is made. Of course, I often talk myself into buying a tool for a specific project, justified by the cost savings of DIY, and then I have the tool for free.

I'm sure your design would work fine for pc if it is mixed to a pulp. I had looked at drywall texture sprayers and they were out of budget for something that I didn't know would actually spray papercrete. I looked around the web and found several designs, including one with a teakettle hopper that was designed by John Cruickshank (sp). They all had the same venturi sprayer principle. I went to a local plumbing supply store and designed on the counter from what they had. It has worked well. It could probably be improved with a little experimentation though I haven't felt the need - since it works I won't "fix" it. The 3' of 4" holds a couple of gallons and weighs close to 20 pounds so it is a two handed sprayer for sure. With a medium grade compressor (12cfm@40psi) and a fifteen gallon tank filled to 110psi I can spray about fifteen minutes and then have to stop to let the compressor catch up. 15cfm would probably be enough to eliminate the breaks, but that's a little beyond the capabilities of a 1hp electric motor. With the regulator feeding me 40psi I can spray about ten feet off a scaffold, nice for the tops of domes. A bigger compressor would be great and let me spray continuously while pumping from the no-tow mixer to the sprayer instead of using a hopper. Since I don't have a grand lying around to buy a nice compressor, I'm planning to convert an old Toyota 4cyl 2.2l truck engine into a compressor. That should give plenty of air flow with the right power source. I mix my pc a bit thin for spraying and the extra water is absorbed by under layers and drains away at the bottom and face. Depending on your recipe you can spray several inches thick, and you might get to experience the sensation of watching a wall slide to the ground when you pass the limit. Shoveling pc from the ground into a wheelbarrow usually introduces assorted trash that will clog your sprayer so you should filter anything you want to spray.

Wow great minds....... Funny u have the same thing with the washers in mine it sprays concrete based stucco. But i guess if u took them out it would spray pc. I don't know im new to pc. Three feet of 4 in pvc must be fair heavy. With my funnel hopper I just stand next to a full wheel barrow of stucco and scoop it in the hopper as needed. I have no on off valve cause I'm using a compressor without a tank. Im guessing the pressure would be 20 lb. The gun stood about a foot from the wall and there was a bit of back splash. So wear a hat and be prepared to get splattered. It is amazing how well some junk glued together can save so much time and labor.
