Re: [papercreters] How to check the oil in my papercrete mixer?

A little water in the oil really seems to be a non-issue. Mixers with water in the oil keep on working, Judith's was in use for four years. No telling how long it has had water in it. The little oil that ends up in the papercrete doesn't hurt anything.

There is a plug on the usual front of the differential, but now it is on top under the tank. If you can access it and get it out then you can check oil level with something flexible enough to stick in there. Depending on how your mixer was put together, you may be able to add oil with a hose.

Changing the seal isn't easy or fun. You have to remove your blade, then remove that huge nut in the middle of the shaft. It's about 1 1/16" on mine, but varies depending on the maker of the differential. The flange is usually rusted in place so you will probably need a puller for that. Places like Auto Zone will rent one for a few dollars. Then you may or may not need a special tool to remove the old seal. Make sure you have the right new seal before you start all this, of course. A leaky seal is better than no seal  : )

Okay, So I'm a little slow with this response, but I saw where somebody had water in the oil in their stock tank mixers. The guy who cuts my yard turned my mixer up and left it that way. Then, when I sat it aright, I saw that some oil leaked from underneath the blade onto the tank. I can tell that there's no water in it (it's black, not that sickly green), but how do I check the level? If oil can seep out, doesn't that mean water can get in the next time I run a batch of paper? Do I need to seal something? It wasn't an issue with me until now. Thanks for any advice...DK ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
