Tool rentals can be pretty expensive. I did this math awhile back and found that I could buy a flooring nailer from Harbor Freight for almost exactly what Home Depot charges to rent one for a week. Yeah, perhaps the rental is a "higher quality" unit to start with, but I figured as long as the HF one did it's intended purpose for longer then a week... I came out ahead! It turned out to be a great tool, put in a whole house of hardwood without a hiccup. 2-3 months later, I have a new wood floor, I have a good working nailer, and I'm thousands ahead of what the rental charges would have been.
Now, some things it pays to rent. Floor sander, for example. Rents for $50 a day, sells for over $1000 used. You generally don't need it more then a couple of days to do a job.
