Yes had thought of that but wouldn't I brush some on before to make a moist surface area?

Do not want the burlap to look wrinkled.

Hope to start this fall.

Greetings,
If you wanted to, you could just nail the piece of burlap to the
shingles as you dip them in the paint/sand/portland mix.  Start at the
bottom and work your way up doing an overlap like a roof.  It would seal
the house from drafts, being water proof and give you a paintable surface.
