Paper, sawdust and cardboard are being used to make both solar
cookers, and little rocket stoves- [as well as bigger ones] too.
I have seen a large adobe, FIXED in place, solar cooker that is
all adobe bricks, and cannot rotate. A solar heated pit greenhouse has been
built with Straw Bales to give bonus insulation, and skipping the standard
cinder blocks for forming.
There have been several solar box cookers made from available
materials, such a papercrete for the full body insulation, or adobe
bricks, when metal or standard wood or cardboard boxes aren't handy.
** This hard to find information is fun to share with others- we all
want to know a 'better' way to use our labor and creative skills
before spending time or money on "conventional" styles.
Solar cooker off grid expert-Barbara Kerr- the inventor who made a
cook box from cardboard, and crumpled newspaper stunned the " solar
experts" who made them in wood or metal only... she proved you can be creative
with simple, cheap, free materials. ..and papercrete hadn't been
invented or I bet she would have tried that too. [In a video she said
she got busy at age 50 and built EVERY kind and shape of solar cooker
you can imagine, until she settled on the very easy and cheap
cardboard box. She encouraged me to try a variety of materials, and
design ideas for my little rocket stove designs.
She was baking cookies in her solar thru the wall oven-- when the
"experts" sat in her kitchen, refuting her claims of baking easily..
until she pulled a tray of hot, baked delicious cookies from the oven
and set them in front of the naysayers!
When I built/designed my own tin can rocket stove preparing for
Y2K in 1999 I was dismayed to find I needed to buy and USE large tin
snips to cut the cans needed....they are hard on smaller, women's,
children's or weaker hands to use.
so I got busy combining my recent wood chip clay, and papercrete
experience applied to making a rocket cook stove, and it worked!
I found I could use cardboard boxes, and odd, ready shaped metal
forms to make a working small rocket cooker. Most people don't own,
or can't afford a set of 3 cutting snips: R, L and straight blades.
.. and in developing countries they have more clay than coffee &
juice cans or tools to use. so this model is one way to make a
functioning stove following the principles of the Winiarski/Approvecho
rocket stove research, at NO cost.

** My BAD for excitedly posting about my Retirement Plans -- and
the offer I made to you all for FREE booklets. .
Of course Papercreters group has a total NO spam policy- my
intention was not to 'Spam'..but to offer information/education- for
free- as I have done willingly for 13 years, especially before I no
longer have the option to do so when the bookstore is sold off..
I always try and trust the best about someone before assuming the
worst about them. So I hope my multi-year contributions to promote
Papercreters, and support and advertise this group to all my book
customers, for the benefit of Jay Hawk [Slurry guy], will continue
with the new owner in 2010.
Many of you have invited me to come visit when I start traveling for
MORE research on building with Alt. materials, papercrete, lime
plasters, etc. SO I am jazzed to do that!
