The peel pattern for the star dome (from the site you referenced) is:
which is identical to the peel pattern for the hemispherical truncation of the Icosaicosadodecahedron (the darker lines).
The star dome adds more pipes instead of the stretcher ropes, to get the same effect by using twice as much pipe. You would have to price rope vs. pipe to see which method would be cheaper.
