[papercreters] Re: PC fire resistance

You make excellent points Spaceman. I agree.

You ask, "why there is so much concern about burning papercrete."

I can't speak for others, but MY concerns include:

1. Fully understanding the smoldering issue will be critical to IBC
approval.

2. I agree that most papercrete out-performs wood in most
situations, but why settle for that? I like the idea of having a
more robust option available. Such a robust option may only be
modestly more expensive and have multitudes of intelligent
applications.

Fire walls between attached garages and living quarters.

Utility rooms with a furnace or hot water heater inside.

Walls and ceilings around fireplaces.

etc.

3. The testosterone factor!

SAY WHAT?

Hey, let's face it. It's not practical for most guys to build air
cannons to perform ballistics tests on papercrete. Pulling out the
torch and impressing friends/neighbors with fire and smoke is the
next best thing!!!!!!!

Excuse me. I'm now feeling an irresistable urge to scratch myself,
smear motor oil on my face, go to the hardware store, jump up and
touch all the low hanging signs, and grunt at the power tools.

argh! argh! argh!

Catch you later, unless I see you there grunting too.

I wonder why there is so much concern about burning papercrete. Take
a 2x4 and put it next to your pc block and subject it to the same
torch test. Then tell me if you'd rather sleep in a stick building or
a pc one. As SG says often, pc is not a concrete product, it is a
wood product. As a wood product, its resistance to fire is superb
compared to most others. It is hard to ignite, won't support flame,
and when it does smolder it puts out lots of smoke to set off your
smoke detector and give you plenty of time to extinguish it.

I'm not saying that we should not make pc as fire proof as possible,
just that it already beats standard construction. Adobe, concrete,
and metal buildings might be better, but most conventional building
methods are more prone to burn than papercrete.
