[papercreters] Re: Judith's Abiquiu project

Thanks Judith for the update.
Glad things are moving along at a little faster pace for you.
We came home and went right to work on our project.
We got an 18' wide wall 10" deep filled and two smaller walls yesterday.
We were going to put up two windows today but the wind over ruled us.
Keep us posted on your progress.

[papercreters] Judith's Abiquiu project

From: williams_judith@hotmail.com
To: papercreters@yahoogroups.com
Subject: Judith's Abiquiu project
Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2009 14:53:13 -0600

Just thought I would send a message to thank all who came out and joined in the fun here in Abiquiu. It was so wonderful to meet everyone. I had a great time and hope everyone else did too. I learned a lot and am so pleased with the progress on my little building.

I went out to the project this morning and was able to get 2 more courses up all around the building. That took 2 loads of slurry. I poured about 2" of slurry into the slip forms and laid blocks on top of the slurry nestled down into the forms. Then I came along and poured more slurry over everything with more blocks on top. So that brought the walls up about a foot in only maybe 2 hours time. My neighbor saw me driving in and came running over to work with me which sped things along nicely. Wind is about 50 mph and it's starting to rain so we quit early. I'm not sure how many courses I could put up in a day, considering the downward pressure may push the bottom slurry out. I'll move the forms up tomorrow and if it's not really windy I'll see how far I can get.

So thanks again everyone. I'll keep you posted and take some pics.

Sincerely, Judith

Re: [papercreters] Re: SEE THE WHOLE GANG

We even worked up a sweat once or twice, better fun can't be bought at any price!

I am in possession of several hundred photos that will be sorted, edited, and made into a photo album or two before posting. I'll leave it to Judith to give details on her clever scheme to make building pc houses a one woman job. Maybe she'll even make an instructional DVD as time allows...

There are now names on most of the photos, enough to identify everyone there. I'm sorting through several hundred shots to make an online photo album in the next few days.

[papercreters] Re: papercrete retreat "if looks could kill"

I hope you restrained yourself.

Day 2 was fun. Pix will soon materialize at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/spaceman01of99/
I only managed to take a few today, too busy working out the form work. Judith came up with a nice system and we "helped" her by refining it today. It was a hot day, and we knocked off early. Now we're sitting around applying attitude adjustment.

Since some folks have evidently had to cancel their trip to the workshop is there any way someone can be added to the workshop at this late time?

My husband and I now can attend if there is space.

Re: [papercreters] PC Fest Excuse

That sucketh verily!

Having been robbed myself several times, I can somewhat relate, but mine was mostly tools and electronics, nothing like a classic machine like that. Luckily these guys weren't interested in my '59 Chevy Apache stepside. The local sheriff's department was less than useless.

<sigh> People who steal a work of art like that should be deconstructed for organ donation. Sorry to hear about it and that you won't be able to make the gathering. My excuse is much lamer, work wouldn't let me have the time.

[papercreters] VARIOUS PC MIXES

I LOVED the paper mache link sent, a friend is a Halloween freak, and
wanks to make some of the dead body parts, etc showed there.!!

and in my UniversalCrete/Kitchencrete- I have used everything from
dry yard grass clipping ( 4-5"long, to drywall rumbles ( inert) to
drywall powder ( ert? hahah active I what I mean)

to pure potters' clay, ground harvested clay, boo glue silty clay,
paper, lime, shrubbery hopped, horsetail, pampas grasses, chooped dy
weeds, sawdust, wood chips, sea weed, any organic material that can be
dried, and chopped up. straw fibers, nylon and Japanese special
fibers, on and on... if you got it... try it.

PARAcrete by Tapasananda uses EPS dust ( smaller that styrofoam
beads.. pure dust he gets bagged for free.) paint, surfactants, wire
mesh, plymesh, and fibers,
http://www.dirtcheapbuilder.com/pabubooncd.html
. also PEAT MOSS is an original for Hyper Tufa mixes from the UK..
cement- moss, sand and fibers.. make a durable "crete" mix for
outdoor basins, potter, etc.

AJUST SEARCH HYPER TUFA.. or my TufaStone mix recipoes with more
clay-lime and no or little cement used.

see>> http://www.dirtcheapbuilder.com/makcongaror2.html

http://www.the-artistic-garden.com/hypertufa.html <<<SHE SHOWS HOW
TO MAKE FAUX STONES TOO.

Water resistant 'rete uses asphalt emulsion ( non toxic "tar" mixed
into paper, ardboard the way Jack Bays, inventor in the 1930's did
it.. still used today.

The stolloween (http://www.stolloween.com/?page_id=67)link you give below, Evelyn is excellent, thanks. I got some good ideas from it.

I don't have a real set recipe I seem to do art/papercrete the way I cook, using what's on hand and how it feels at the time. I found my basic recipe I posted when I applied for the contest and reposted it below. I have not explored any outdoor projects as yet, but have thought about using ceramic tile/grout sealant, faux finish glaze as sealant, as I have been impressed with how well it has worked around a bathroom sink for about 10 years and wall still looks great.

I used 2 to 3 standard plastic grocery bags of shredded paper (junk mail, newspaper, shiny heavy ink adv brochures, etc) learned it is not good to use credit cards, heavy plastic, window envelopes, etc. doesn't mix/blend well with other materials.

1)Put shredded paper in old 5 gallon paint bucket, poured boiling hot water over paper, let soak sometimes several days.

2)Mixed paper and water with large paint mixer quite a bit to break up pulp and get real mushy, added small bucket, mostly full of quickcrete and a handful or two of wet clay. Clay just felt like it wanted to be there and I needed an excuse to wet it down and squish in
it a bit. ;-) Sometimes added another scoop or two of concrete and or
clay, again; it's like seasoning the soup, what does it want/need.

3)Mix very thoroughly, added a slosh of bleach to kill some of the bacteria that seems to develop and make the mix a bit smelly. This makes about the perfect amount to fill my mold. Any left overs I pour into various takeout containers, yogurt containers, etc to carve later and experiment with various surface treatments.

Hope this helps with your pumpkin project. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Best,
Lynda / ~ljl~

Yea we will all be decked out in our finest Playtex rubber gloves. We
may try the latex paint addition also since I have many gallons of
pink paint left over from doing their rooms years ago. Now they are
into blues and greens that I can live with.
