My day job is Project Supervisor (I'm usually the one I'm supervising) Monday I replaced an old door in the building next door to City Hall, the replacement door was new and prehung but I didn't want to replace all the trim, so I just reused the old stuff, there were large dry rotted areas in the old trim and I want to fill the holes with something so I could paint the whole thing and nobody would know I hadn't replaced everything. I mixed up 2/3 gallon wet paper pulp, four hands full drywall texture mud (because I had some setting around), and 24 oz of dry portland, mixed it all up and to my surprise it turned out to be a very smooth professional looking mix, I filled the large holes with the stuff, it didn't shrink much if any, today I'm going to sand it and paint it and nobody will be the wiser that I didn't replace all the old trim.

I mixed a batch of papercrete today with the idea i would make blocks for kids to play with. Well it didn't go as planned but the result was interesting. I've pretty much stayed with my original recipe. If it ain't broke don't fix it kind of thing. But I wanted the blocks to be water resistant and cleanable so I added 20 gallons of latex paint to my 200 gallon mixer. My daughter is a set painter in the film industry and I get a lot of leftover paint. I didn't put any pumice or sand in the mix, just the newspaper, about 1/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of cement/flyash (approx 1/8 of a bag), and the paint. I had made a form for the block figuring I would make 1 block at a time. Well the mix was so different from what I am used to that I gave up on the block idea. The water was leaching out so slowly that I would have been there all night. So I scooped the mix out of the small form and put it and the rest from the mixer into my roof panel forms. I had way too much mix for the forms so I took some of it and plastered some of my walls. Boy is that stuff great to work with. It was so smooth and sticky. It really went on nicely. I had to leave in a hurry as rain was coming in and my wipers don't work so I left the forms on and will see how they come off tomorrow. It was sort of an unsuccessful day but interesting anyway. Now the rain is pouring down so I don't know how it will affect the papercrete. Will let you know tomorrow.
