Hello all 'creators...well I tried to 'retire' in 2009..sold the bigger dirtcheapbuilder.com bookstore to a guy in MT..and kept my papercrete site with all the  Alt Building guides and CDs,  out of print/hard to find booklets on natural building going until right now.  So I am keeping the papercrete.com Domaine Name for now..but giving up an active website.

I am working (no where near done) on a Facebook page also 'papercrete.com' ..and people who want to find me will..so In case anyone asks..now you know.     https://www.facebook.com/dirtcheaphome/

I hate it when someone disappears..like FERNCO METALS whose shop burned down, so they just quit making Cinva Rams (from plans they got from me) and didn't tell anyone!!    I still get questions looking for them.     Not sure if they had no business insurance, or didn't save design/machoine tool files to recreate all the work they had done. I know there is still a strong market to buy ready made ones. I tried to buy the fernco name from them just to keep awareness, but the owner didn't respond.. I know the devastating fire and his age were factors.

Anyway... hope all of you never stop playing with 'crete in some form!!  Thanks for the memories!

Good to hear you are still rocking Charmaine!  Garth and I are working on our house finally, that is when the farm doesn't interfere and it is not raining.  I will come and find you on facebook.  Hopefully with pics of what we are doing, soon.

Re: [papercreters] Re: Papercrete Panel by layering newspaper

what about a layer of cloth dipped in slurry then a layer of some kind of net and slurry

with a top 'render' layer of papercrete-use screen under to let the water drain and a  wooden framework

to determine the size- you could try little test pieces to get the right thickness and rigidity.

i have had good results from cloth dipped in  portland slurry fortified with bondcrete put

onto ringlock fencing  tensioned between posts. i found that thinner natural fibre cloth worked best.

Poly cotton sheeting and synthetics were not good but cotton flannelette or old t-shirts worked well.

I tried burlap but it  was expensive as i had to source it new and i didn't like it anyway. The cloth can

weave throo the fencing  as strips (awkward) or easier, smaller pieces  can be laid laid over

the horizontal wires like overlapping shingles. Once it is set, it leaves a good keyed surface to render over.

You can also make shapes with the wire to do sculptural work  but Concievably you could adapt the

idea to make panels?

Re: [papercreters] Re: Papercrete Panel by layering newspaper

I think I have a very similar question. Back in the 70's some young people build a cement teepee using burlap, wire and wooden poles. When I was little, I mixed water and flour and dipped paper into it to make all kinds of things that were semi-rigid (paper mache). Would it be possible to make some semi-rigid panels using unshredded paper and a mixture of portland, sand and water? A flat piece of anything (plywood) could be used as a "form". Maybe plastic would needed to cover the wood. Maybe just a little oil. Has anyone does something like this? If so, what were the results and what mixture was used?

the big trick is how WET is the cement slurry? it will pour off the sides, taking water and cement.. the best thing to test is an old window screen to pour slurry onto first..let drain, THEN pour the mushy mix..of course the Portland cement mix will begin to set if you wait too long.  how will you determine the evenness?  does it matter?

layering old sheets, burlap, onion sacking, etc. with a cement slurry to cure in layers, etc, many ways to make test panels.

how the paercrete sticks to FLAT  ply is another issue..just try it, keep good 'science' notes as you go.

also consider a hydrated lime+paper mix..that can sit days as it loses water, and can be trolled into  place or drained over the tub mixer, then dump onto the board.  stapling netting or rough it up in some way will make it stick better.

I have used  a paper-clay-lime-sawdust- asphalt emulsion mix  onto old punk boards, and it sticks well.

see pics of a CARPET coated with a "rubberized" crete, and the old board:

[papercreters] Papercrete Panel by layering newspaper

Hi,

I am interested in constructing papercrete panel sitting on top a 1/4" plywood. I was just wondering if anyone had done so by layering the newspaper soaked in a watery cement mix.

Please share or give advice on this approach.

Much appreciated. Thank you.
