[papercreters] Re: Thanks Nolan... Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Stucco sprayer, finsh papercrete mix.

Hello Calle,
The independednt builder book looks neat. Thank you for the heads up.

A couple notes. I have the list coming to me in digest format and may miss a question.  If I can ever do anything to help, please don't hesitate to email nolan@mortarsprayer.com. Our phone number is also also posted on our stucco  sprayer website.
First off, Our sprayers are great tools and real time savers *BUT* I wouldn't want anyone hold off of building and experimenting because they don't have a sprayer.

This is exciting. The chance to build a low cost structure with your son can be a lifetime treasure.

Bob's approach of spraying a thin layers has allowed him to build in wet weather.
There may be other solutions that can work to match your situation.

Yes you can tint the mix and not paint. The outside of our home is tan from pigment. On the inside we did white lime plaster. (Bob's papercrete plaster would be a great choice)  Search natural pigments.

Surface bonded block can be  another very economical and easy way to build. Please seach that in your studies. The key I have found is to combine the best ideas from various systems to fit the resources and site. Like Papercrete and cobb and surface bonded block.

While you are working on a plan, you could start casting PC blocks from the waste paper in your home. By the time you are ready to build, you would have a nice supply.

Here is an amazing home  built from found materials.  If you and your son built something like this out of sight, the tax man probably wouldn't notice. If you keep it tiny like this, he probably wouldn't care when it is spotted.
And what an incredible gift for a young man!

Happy New Year!
Nolan

[papercreters] Thanks so much Spaceman...Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Passive Solar Books?

Spaceman,  Thanks again.  Wood gas, an interesting concept, will try to learn more about it.   There is so much to learn and never enough time.  I am a homeschooling mom and time is so precious.  But I am determined to get this done.

One never knows what the winters will be like out there. This past summer had rain most every day, not usual for high dessert. The wildflowers were fantastic.

We do not live out there, so have to plan ahead very carefully.  Charmaine did send a great resource for books today.  Updated ones that I had not read yet.

The R40 something must mean that you don't have to produce much heat to stay warm.  We keep our regular house at 65 or so in the winter and at 80 in the summer, so we are use to cooler temps.  Out there the winds blow so much in the winter, so don't know how it will be.

I am running as fast as I can, as living in the city is so undesirable anymore.  I long to live out there and be creative and raise most of our own food.  My faternal grandparents lived in a soddy in the next county to the west in the 1800's-1900's, so my soul is out there.  If they could do it , I can do it.

When you have a chance post some new pictures.  How do I contact those that have pictures on this site?  I tried but the send message would never open for me to write to anyone.  I guess I will just have to go and figure out the names and go from there.  Hope I can find their email address and just transport them to the Yahoo group.

Well work is calling and the 18 inches of snow on the ground make me want to stay in doors.

Wow had a great time going through your pages. Is the dome house done, as in livable?
I lived in the big dome from 2001 until 2008. I had to spend a year doing parental care, then moved into the small dome in February of this year. I'm still adding papercrete but have about R12 at the thinnest part, and R48 over about half of it so far.

We have so much to do yet before we get started. Do not have the cash to do the steel dome thing. Will just have to do the PC walls and inner walls.  Trying to get water to the site in the early spring.
I have experimented with making domes without a frame, casting pc triangles and then putting them together as a panel dome. However, you can often get scrap pipe from construction sites since electricians commonly throw away any conduit shorter than 5' at the end of the day. Even if you have to buy the tubing, you can make a frame for a 16' dome from a couple of hundred dollars worth of pipe.

You said that you were doing the heated floor system, yes?  Are you putting in a terra tile floor?
Right now my floor is 2" of concrete floating on 10" (+/-) of papercrete. I'll possibly cover it with ceramic tile from Mexico, but have not finalized my plans. I may just do a textured and stained concrete cap.

Owen Grieger or what ever his name is the Mr. Hart from Colo have a page that tells about using road base for it.  As we will be off the grid we need to use all the methods that we can to stay warm and use as little power as possible.

Have you ever found a way to make a steam system work to create power as in a generator? Thought that in the winter with a wood burner and a wood cook stove may be able to capture some of that heat for a power source.  I am not a person with the background to build that kind of thing, but am willing to learn from others and use the web.
Steam is dangerous at the pressures needed to generate power, not something for a novice to play with. You can generate electricity directly from heat by using Peltier devices, though they aren't exactly dirt cheap. Another alternative might be using woodgas to run a generator.

Right now need a good book on passive solar.  We will use passive solar and wind power for our off the grid living.
I have pv panels and a small wind generator. I bought them used at about half the retail cost. I am still connected to the grid for large loads like welders and power tools that would deplete my small storage bank rapidly. Can't recommend a book, though.

Re: [papercreters] Happy New Year Everyone

Hi Clare,

Can you post some pictures of your press?  I was thinking after seeing some of the pictures at this site of doing smaller forms to build up the walls.  But all new info helps me come up with better plans.

What a wonderful thing to get all the paper in that manner.  We will have to haul ours much father, as the county only has 900 people in thousands of acres.  I think I will put an ad on the radio that I will drive to town one day a week and pick up all the paper I can. Also will try to find a business that does alot of shredding.   Our home now is 6 hours from our building site , so we have to make hay while the sunshines when we have the materials and the weather.

Happy New Year to All,  You are such a blessing to me.

[papercreters] Thanks Nolan... Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Stucco sprayer, finsh papercrete mix.

Hi Nolan,

Thanks for you advice.  Just came upon some good books today that Charmaine had sent with a messages. I now want to buy everyone of them, but money does not allow.

Has anyone used or read "The Greal Goods Indpendent Builder Designing and Building  A House Your Own Way"?

I have designed two houses but the first is my dream, but afraid of the tax man.  The second is not working for me.  I have to get this done soon, as we have to submitt (our own thoughts) to the county assessor for taxing reasons.  The area where we are building does not have tons of building codes but I want no surprises at all with those folks.

I plan on sending a book list if this guy is interested.  The only reason we will submit a materials list is that they tax you on materials, labor and sq footage.  We want them to see how low cost is it, as we have all used doors, windows, trim etc.

I have to have well thought out plans , I am not a let's just try this or that, I need a plan. Out in the sticks you have to be ready for most everything.

So I want to build and then spray it with the final coats.  Can one put a colorant in the final coat, so you don't have to paint it later?  We want it to blend with the land, do not want a city house in the country.

You all know what I mean , a house that blend with the landscape so it looks part of it.

My first step may be to finish the outside of an old mobile home if we can get it cheap enough, so that I have an on site place to live.   It would add insulation to the mh so that it would be better in the winter time.  It could then become part of the total design.

We are such novices, so all of your advice is so wonderfull.

Our 15 year old son will be the only one out there with me almost 99 percent of the time.  There are so many things to think of, and I do not have a long time to get this project done.  It needs to be completed as much as possible before the snow falls next winter.

I do not want to move back to the city, but continue on cold days to get as much done as possible.

Any and all words of wisdom will be well taken.

Time to hit the store, weekly sales ending, so must tear myself away from my love, learning how to build alternative homes.

Good morning Calle and everyone,
You have found one of the best groups on the net for up to date information on PC. There are lots of people here that are happy to help. Spaceman has done a great job of sharing home built versions of sprayers. He has also come up with inventive ways to mix and build. His site is worth seeing for details.
Mikey Sklar and Bob Merrill have the updated versions of our plaster sprayer. They can share first hand papercrete spraying advice.
Bob has done amazing work with Papercrete while building in a wet climates. He technique is to spray a thin layer all the way around the structure and then come back and do another lift. This gives time for the maximum surface area to dry the mix.

Bob Merrill also uses the sprayers for papercrete stucco as a finishing mix. A couple years ago we made a family trip to Northern Washington and saw one of the most beautiful hand finished homes I had ever been in. Bob started with a barn that needed to be quickly turned in to a house for a family with several children. His papercrete stucco had a workable texture that was much easier to apply than some traditional cement mix stucco. The end result was something that should have been in a magazine. When you get to finishing your home, I would suggest contacting Bob and getting the details.

The new stucco sprayers have several improvements that I have wanted to do for some time. There is still a non-rusting hopper but now we have added a sturdy handle to the back of it for a new grip point. We also made the jets unscrew so they can be replaced if clogged and adjusted to match the compressor you have. The standard size jets are installed the hopper sprayer and the larger jets are with the cleaning kit. If you have a larger compressor, you can switch to the larger jets and spray the plaster harder. (This can also help remove some extra water in the spraying).

We feel very fortunate to be offering a made in the USA product. Our goal is to help people build great homes. We have an updated web site at www.mortarsprayer. com . It now includes resource areas. One of the resource sections I will be working to expand is the papercrete section. If anyone has pictures of successful projects or details they would like to share, please let me know.

I would like to say thank you to everyone on this list that has done so much to help others get started building. There are great things happening here on the list. From now through the end of January, please let us know that you are on the list and we will offer free shipping when you buy a sprayer.

Best regards,

[papercreters] Thanks Charmaine great sprayer for PC- & newer solar books

Thanks Charmaine,

Will check out the sprayers in a week or so.  I went to the picture section of this site, but most just put no words or so few for the novice it is hard to write the story to the pictures.

When  you mention the popcorn effect, is there another attachment that allows for spaying it more smoothly for enterior walls?  Hard to hang shelves and pictures on popcorn!  Also have other done celings with the pc mixture?

We had thought of doing a terra tile floor as first introduced to us by David Easton, then more recently by Owen Grieger (wrong spelling I think) the engineer that designs earthbag and other alternative house plans.  Perhaps pc floors would transfer heated water better, and be easier to clean and maintain with kids, boots and country dirt?

The book you mentioned is the one our library had, but not the last addition.  Will see if I can find it, or look on line at view the table of contents.

His whole premise has been the solar pad that a house is set on.  We do not want the cost of cement as it will put the cost of the house over the top, the county will charge us outlandish taxes.

Maybe he has changed his methods.  Thanks so much.

So why aren't you going to write books?  Maybe after a long rest!

Thanks Charmaine,

Calle

PS, so you sell all of the cheap builder books, just caught your email address name.  Will try to find the time to go to your site. Although this is a bad time of year for us to buy.  Homeowners ins due, car lic due, house taxes and land taxes coming up soon.  You know the story!

[papercreters] Thanks HNY Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Passive Solar Books?

Greetings, HNY

Thanks for the resources, I will see if the library can get the book, ususally always check out these books before purchase.

With having Rammed Earth, Strawbale, Earthbag and Ceramic Buildings on my shelves, I am now into PC and know that this is for us.

But all the info has to gel first.  With only a wood stove and passive solar it is so important to do it right the first time.

Will try a pump house or a shed first or something to practice.

I am so amazed at the talent of so many I have met here and on the web.

Found one guy who was using PC and pop cans for a garden thing .  Another was doing stepping stones.

Someone had even done a pond.

Happy New Year,

Calle

The below 358 page book is a good (I got it as a gift) - but is quite technical with math formula's in quite a few places. Outside of those, it does have great diagrams and info, I.E, about thermal comfort, stack effect. And onwards into Light and Sonic environment. Good data sheets for each section, I.E: thermal properties, and sonic properties, of all kinds of materials. This info in itself is very helpful to possibly some wiser choices.

[papercreters] Thanks so much Spaceman...Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Passive Solar Books?

Hi Spaceman,

Wow had a great time going through your pages. Is the dome house done, as in livable?

We have so much to do yet before we get started. Do not have the cash to do the steel dome thing. Will just have to do the PC walls and inner walls.  Trying to get water to the site in the early spring.

You said that you were doing the heated floor system, yes?  Are you putting in a terra tile floor?

Owen Grieger or what ever his name is the Mr. Hart from Colo have a page that tells about using road base for it.  As we will be off the grid we need to use all the methods that we can to stay warm and use as little power as possible.

Have you ever found a way to make a steam system work to create power as in a generator? Thought that in the winter with a wood burner and a wood cook stove may be able to capture some of that heat for a power source.  I am not a person with the background to build that kind of thing, but am willing to learn from others and use the web.

Right now need a good book on passive solar.  We will use passive solar and wind power for our off the grid living.

Thanks again,

Calle

I've done a bit of spraying, with a home made tool. Some people use the Tirolessa sprayer, which is more expensive. I have considered trying a drywall texture tool, but have not yet. My experience indicates that you need a good compressor with a large tank if you want to spray continuously. My compressor with a 30 gallon tank and 7.5cfm head can not keep up, will let me spray for 15-20 minutes and then I have to take a ten minute break and let it recharge. I think 14-16cfm might be enough for continuous work, or another sprayer might be more efficient.

I like spraying onto vertical surfaces, you can build up a couple of inches thick in one session, and it sticks well. Get too thick and it'll all slide to the ground. You can apply directly to stucco mesh without very much blow through. Spraying is not nearly as fast as slip forming, but lets you do more intricate shapes.

Don't know if you've seen my pc house pix, they are not in the group area, are on my website. The dome I'm living in now has a webpage from a previous incarnation. I sold it and then after a couple of years it came back home (long story) so I put it together again and moved into it, now using the big dome as storage/workshop. The small dome has hydronic tubes in the floor, about to be connected to a solar collector and storage tank. Not totally passive, I will use a small solar powered pump. For summer cooling I'm going to try night sky radiation to chill a tank of water. Even without that, it is livable even in the desert 105 degree temperatures.

[papercreters] Blowing Papercrete like stucco??? Passive Solar Books?

Greetings All,

Have continued my education via the web, have watched others blowing papercrete like they do stucco.

Have any of you ever tried this? What is the tool they are using. It is a regular stucco application tool?

We have so much to learn, and so little time to learn it in.

Also are there any newer Passive Solar books out there. The one reference I found on line is a book from the early 90's, great info, but maybe something newer.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

If any of you live in a Papercrete home, have you posted pictures and I just don't know about them?

[papercreters] MC to all and To All A Good night...Surviving & building the future-When Technology Fails, A Manual For Self Reliance

So happy that you are safe.  We are having a blizzard here, safe at home, the baby that had been kidnapped is home safe, the dad is still on the lamb.  Praise be.

I have the book on Earthbag building, we were going to do this method, but the work of bagging the earth was too much.  We were even going to buy a grain elevator, the kind that goes on the back of a tractor's power takeoff, makes it much easier to auger the dirt up to the walls.

The other one sounds interesting.

Merry Christmas to all and Too All A Good night, too much Cheese cake, and chocolater fondue.

Cheerful greetings!   I found a  big book online to download, plus
others you can search for at this FREE site.       www.slideshare.net
where people upload their books and presentations.  this one below
is 400 pages on    "homesteading & self reliance" everything from
spider bites to extending harvest in cold climates.   my little 'gift'
to you all.

I will write this once, on Christmas eve, I hope no one minds, but I
am happy to be alive today to send it.

While driving for Christmas at friend's  on Friday night  I was struck
in a head on collision that completely totaled my Subaru Forester,
and I  was able to walk  away alive  at the scene.

Of course I can't drive now for a while, and need to recover from the
impact shock and   injuries.

So,  PLEASE always wear your seat belt, and if you can choose a safer
car  next time you need one, please DO..

The ONLY reason I am alive now is  my 7 year old  Subaru took the
impact of the head on- estimated at 100+ mph blow. The  guy in a truck
at fault (impatiently trying to pass  a slower car, into my lane on a
two lane road)    made it too, and my car protected me.

So I feel blessed to share this-- and I want to OFFER  all of you the
two free books I am giving to customers, just email me and I will send
you the link to download Earthbag Building  tools & tips by Kaki
Hunter,  $29 and Appropriate Building Materials from the UK- $33..
