RE: [papercreters] Re: Insulation Value

The "R Fairy Tale" article is the most ridiculous piece of hyperbole that I have read in a long time.   Eventually it devolves into a sales pitch for u foam, and by that time the writer had lost all credibility in my opinon.

For those of us interested in alternative building, good insulation, good air quality and low power bills are of peak importance.  And if we're going to put so much effort into figuring out how to use our alternative building materials, we want something economical and cozy when we're done.

I AM the research queen . . . just ask Nolan and he'll tell you it's true.  And I've accumulated a mass of links and articles on different stuff.  I hope these few help y'all.

http://www.monolithic.com/plan-design/rfairy/index.html  Here's the R-Fairy one.  If you think the r-value of something is worth a plug nickel, you might want to read this.

Reliant Energy's version http://www.reliant.com/en_US/Page/Generic/Public/esc_oma_insulation_primer_bus_gen.jsp (While high R-values sound attractive, the real effect of insulation—the U-value—diminishes with each additional inch of insulation. For example, an insulated 2 x 4 wall has an R-value of 13 and a U-value of .077. Upgrading to a 2 x 6 wall adds 5 points of R-value (18-13) but only drops the U-value by .022 (.077-.055). Adding another 5 points of R-value would lower U-value even less—by only .011.)

I'm gonna leave it there.
