[papercreters] Has Anybody Tried Tires as a Permanent Form?

I keep thinking that tires with small drain holes would make a good, permanent form for a cement rich papercrete slurry. Has anybody tried this? Or does anybody have any ideas for a simple, cheap slipform? We are really wanting to get something out on the land this summer for a sturdy, semi-permanent shelter for the fence building week. All ideas are welcome. Thanks!

[papercreters] Papercrete In Indiana

Hello,

I have been visiting this site for a while. I love the idea and dream of living in a papercrete home and presenting workshops in a papercrete building and hosting papercrete workshop presenters. I often refer people to this group and tell them to join to learn the details about this beautiful mix.

In collaboration with others, I am working on my 4th annual "Simply Healthy: Creating Sustainable Communities" Simply Living Fair and Wellness Expo - http://www.indianaholistichealth.net/wellnessexpo.htm.

Because of my interest, I would love to find someone nearby who would want to make a workshop presentation about papercrete. Presenters are paid through abundant advertising on the Indiana Holistic Health Website. Although I/we have no $ and we are dependent on donations and sponsorship to put this event on. I want to know about the possibility of presenting a hands on workshop and what would be needed to make it happen if a sponsor to cover materials, etc. for such an activity can be found.

Yes, I dream in papercrete. And look forward to hearing from someone.

Regards

RE: [papercreters] Who's making wet slurry this weekend?

Started a slip form wall a few weeks ago. Feel like I will never go back to the block method again. So much faster and the wall comes out smooth and very hard. Had video but it is locked in the camera. Have my computer guru working on it.

Also poured some roof panels (about 30" x 48') with the regular formula minus the pumice. They are taking a long time to dry but we have been having some glorious thunder storms every afternoon so it is understandable. Went out today and hefted one. It's about 30 lbs. Should be maybe 20 when dry.

Been spending most of my time trying to learn how to operate this darned computer. Look out the window at the bright sunshine every morning but discipline myself to the lessons. Oh well.

Treated myself to a "lost afternoon" today designing my next project (out on the back porch with clouds of mosquitoes encircling me). Delightful!

Sincerely, Judith

Warm weather has arrived.

I bet quite a few people will be slopping some slurry around.

What specific project are you making? No project is too small.

Have any pictures of your active project so far?

Re: [papercreters] solar collectors

Someone marketed an inflatable reflector years ago, with clear front and mirrored back, but I haven't seen one lately. I think if I had an inflatable reflector I might just leave it as is. It would be great for those wilderness camping trips. I do have a couple of mylar space blankets that could be made into a balloon. Maybe I could seal the edges with Gorilla tape.

Another nice design I saw was based on a round container of mercury that was rotated. The mercury flowed into a parabolic shape with focus determined by rpm, and made a great reflector. Too bad it was extremely toxic.

It got down to the mid 50's here a couple of weeks ago. I put on long pants and a hoodie.

[papercreters] Re: Who's making wet slurry this weekend?

Hey Donald,

How about some pictures of your mixer for starters? Feel free to offer details about its construction.

Your clay/cardboard mix sounds interesting. Excellent use of available materials. I'm glad to see you looking into Boric Acid. Your clay/cardboard only mix might be vulnerable to mold/mildew without some kind of inhibitor. Hopefully your clay content is high enough to inhibit fire or smoldering of the cured/dried final product.

Keep the updates coming.

[papercreters] solar collectors

Oh, another small project/experiment. I had a couple of satellite dishes lying around, the small oval ones. A couple of days ago I slapped papercrete a couple of inches thick on the dish, using the dish to make a parabolic surface. After it gets really well cured then I will attach small mirrors to use it as a solar concentrator. Why not just use the metal dish covered with mirrors? Because it's not papercrete!   No, really because I can make several pc dishes from the same mold and then I'll have several to experiment with. I already covered one with aluminum tape and set a 1x2 on fire in less than a minute, so I'm pretty sure it'll warm a cup of tea with 1" square mirrors as a better reflector than the aluminum tape.
