Re: [papercreters] Simplicity

I can usually move things carefully in a couple of days, sometimes the next day if the wind is blowing. It takes a couple of weeks to get hardness. Complete curing and drying takes months. I live in a desert where the humidity is low and the temperature is high.

The cure/dry time is a factor of air circulation, humidity, temperature, thickness, shape, your recipe, and of course the initial water content depending on draining, compression, like that.

After a few batches you'll get a feel for how soon you can move it. I have seen videos of Mike McCain moving green 12x12x18 blocks the day after pouring. The preferred way is to use slip forms or regular full forms so you can pour in place, remove the forms usually within hours, and then not worry about it. In a while it will get hard.

You did great! That looks like some nice mud, how did you like working with it?

With a round bottom bowl like that you might get away with coating the outside and then maybe embedding tiles/rocks or something as Charmaine suggested.

I give up.

The link was working when I first posted it.  I even tested the TinyURL when I built it, and it worked.

Now it seems Yahoo won't allow any link to direct someone to a file in a group files section.  What the crap is that all about?  I don't know what Yahoo is doing, but I'll be pulped if I allow their stupidity to stop us from discussing something about papercrete.

1.  Sign into Yahoo.
2.  Go here

3.  Scroll down about a third of the way down the page.
4.  Click the link to "Daycreek Event."

Excuse me while I go mutter a few choice words about Yahoo to the neighbor's dog who I hear outside my window.  He sounds just as pissed off about Yahoo as I am right now.  Or maybe he doesn't like being outside in the rain?  Naaaah... it's gotta be Yahoo.  That dog senses idiots instinctively.

So, I get a Yahoo Updates in your groups email, and it's sayin' some "gakayaker" commented on Motherreiver's photos (I didn't see that comment, probably tucked in somewhere), but just for grins, I entered "daycreek" in the search window, and up pops some guy "slurryman" sayin':

Re: Daycreek event chat on file
sorry bout the long link... I knew better, but got in a hurry. It's also really easy for someone to just click the files link and see the daycreek file in the list.

and there's other links right there (27 at last count) re: daycreek. That's how I skinned that cat, anyway. Many thanks to you, Jay, you did set it up, just Yahoo havin' fun with ya.

Re: [papercreters] Re: Papercrete and Cordwood Masonry

Or perhaps I should have made something else clear.

You can only view that file if you are logged into your Yahoo Account.

Sign in to Yahoo using the YahooID you registered on Papercreters. Then try clicking the link, and it will probably work.

But yes. Yahoo is still inept. It would be nice if yahoo returned a page TELLING YOU TO SIGN IN FIRST rather than just leaving you hanging thinking the file doesn't exist. Of course, that would MAKE SENSE, and Yahoo simply will not tolerate things making sense.

Or even a re-direct to the login page, followed by another redirect to the page originally requested... like most other websites seem to be able to do! anyway, I'm off to look up the details of my Y! login.... this is an interesting idea.

[papercreters] Re: Simplicity

Release agents may not be needed, but some may still want to use a coating of old glossy paint, or a heavy dose of used cooking oil to protect the forms to help them last. That is, for those who plan on using and reusing their forms for more than a short time.

Most forms are usually made from wood, and the wood will tend to soak up a lot of water making the forms a lot heavier to work with. The water soaked wood is also more likely to twist and warp. A good coating of oil or glossy paint will minimize all that. Makes for less work and less headaches on larger projects. Is this a big deal? Perhaps not. It's more of an annoyance factor, but too many annoyances can build up and become nightmares on a big project.

Bitumen was mentioned earlier... bad choice for coating a form.

Then again... if your forms are usually made from scrap material, and/or you're only doing a small project, it may not be worth the effort.

Your choice.

Re: [papercreters] Re: Trimming your replies

I do not use a Blackberry and have never had one however I did a quick search on Bing:
Search term:    Is there a way to edit email replys on a blackberry?

The results brought up a link to this:

The Unofficial BlackBerry Weblog

Where I found this option:

Forward, Reply, and Edit for BlackBerry does exactly what its name implies.  It allows you to edit messages that you intend to forward or reply to.  This ability is so basic that it is hard to believe that it isn't already included in the BlackBerry OS.

There is a link at the bottom of the page this was on to download it.

Hope this helps.

[papercreters] Trimming replies and threads getting entangled

Really, this is more for Spaceman's benefit, but I didn't want to reply to the original thread, out of genuine respect to him. Spaceman, you wrote:

Some of our members live in remote areas without high speed connections,
and pay dearly by the byte for data transfer.

Please trim your replies down to the part you are actually addressing.
There is no need to leave a long string under a short four or five
sentence reply. It's not hard to do, and it really helps out the folks
who don't have a fast connection.

Thanks.

No good deed goes unpunished, I guess. See, what I did here is to highlight the above text and do a copy/paste to insert it. I used the same topic but modified it a tad. It is solely to show that we could write a simple comment that doesn't necessarily truncate the original or main thread, but can be deleted without affecting the original. Like, a simple remark like "Good idea!" Or, "Nice work!" or whatever is conversational but not worth dragging along all the extra lines of the original.
If the reply is substantive and/or lengthy, then the "reply to all" button is more appropriate, since it may help a person to join a thread at that point but allows them to see it from the start. I really don't need a reply here, maybe a snappy riposte, if you'd like, but I value everyone's comments and contributions. I find myself wondering, "why am I posting this, when all I was doing was commenting along the thread about papercrete formulas for use in garden walls, and maybe learning from the advice of the gurus of papercrete"?
Note that I will delete anything under this crappy thread, just to show it has no greater importance. T-t-t-that's all, folks!

I'm confused. Nothing new about that :)

It sounds like you are saying you are using a Blackberry, but the footer
says you are using Android. I know nothing about Blackberries except my
brother had problems with his. If it is android, maybe we can find a
solution.

I understood that but addressed him because he had posted the message.

We all learn about different phones.

I would love a feature to remove stuff to forward.

Sorry Calle, I was not replying directly to you, but to the whole group, if you didn't want the group input you should have emailed spaceman directly. Any message posted to this site is open for group discussion. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Well I use a smart phone 99% of the time can not trim or delete so your post was not applicable to me. That is why I wrote to Spaceman.

Re: [papercreters] Re: Trimming your replies

Well my phone does not have a delete key on.my keypad. Nor can I highlight part of the message to delete.

Please send me the page covering this topic. We have had a smart phone for many years.

There is a place to delete the total.original message.

I hate replies that totally eliminate the previous message.

I would be so grateful to be able to remove the previous senders names and email addresses.

My posts are limited because of this problem.

My Blackberry should have Bernard the easiest as it is the safest phone.

Have had Droid and Samsung.

All you have too do is use the "X" or delete key, you will note I removed all the ">" from your message, they appear in any reply message automatically. ;-)

Hi Spaceman

Please know that so far they do not have a program or an app that allows us smart phone people to trim delete or remove any part of any messages.

One time a Verizon rep tried to show me a 12 step.yes 12 steps to try and delete parts of an email.

Needless to.say it was so complicated that doing it killed any desire to respond.

Re: [papercreters] Simplicity

Thank you!  It was fun! I will be at it more because I need to done stones in place and more little walls.  These are just silly little tests except for the larger rectangle ones - I do hope to actually use them on the hill for holding flowers in some potting soil - not quite the "picket" idea, but I might use them horizontally, maybe even saw (or break) in half and zig zag them.

I was never sure when my mud was done.  it seemed after putting in the equal parts Portland cement and sand in enough water to make a slurry, I just started throwing in the shredded paper (and more water) until I could squeeze it into a ball after letting it churn for a while.   My last batch was better than the first.

You did great! That looks like some nice mud, how did you like working with it?

With a round bottom bowl like that you might get away with coating the outside and then maybe embedding tiles/rocks or something as Charmaine suggested.
