Wouldn't we all?
I imagine the cactus would like a greenhouse in your area.

Prickly is easy to grow. Once when I went home on leave I took some seeds to my sister, who was in high school. She planted them in an area that gets 50-60 inches of rain a year, and by the time she graduated there was a cluster of ppear that was higher than the peak of the roof on the house. It can survive desert conditions but loves water as long as you don't keep it sopping wet, let it dry out some between waterings, so sandy soil. Want some seeds? Just a couple of pears (for genetic diversity) can cover a lot of ground with prickly, and you get the bonus of the fruit to eat or make jelly from. Just burn the tiny spines off before touching them. For a SASE you can have a lifetime supply of opuntia, no skill required.

You actually have me wondering how difficult it would be to cultivate the darned things. Then again, I'm not particularly skilled at growing plants. That's probably the worst idea I've had yet.In papercreters@yahoogroups. , Mikey Sklar <sklarm-yahoo@com ...> wrote:<snip> I am going to do a prickly pear paint coat over the cement. The prickly mix is: - 300 prickly paddles - 50 gallons of water - 20 lbs slacked lime - 1 lb red iron oxide - 1 lb yellow iron oxide This should give me about 60 gallons of orange paint that has a consistency of elastomeric roofing sealer and costs less than $0.50agallon. I have used a similiar mix on a gate and my trailer roof.Yahoo!
