Re: [papercreters] papercrete in the far north frozen wasteland

I don't have any structure in mind, I am thinking built from scratch.  I thought covering a mobile home with strawbale would be a good idea, papercrete would also seem viable.  I was wondering about the snow banks which can cover a house, and spring thaws, as well as the cold temps.

If you keep it dry, pc should perform as well as any other insulation. Considering that pc runs in the range of R3 per inch of thickness, you would probably want lots of thickness in that kind of temperature. Have you done any heat loss calculations on a building you are thinking of? Things like doors and windows, slab insulation, roof material and color all affect it, along with the amount of exposed area.

You might also consider a vermicomposting system that uses red wiggler worms.

Re: [papercreters] Re: permit to use papercrete in city in Texas

Greetings,

The toilet is a standard bucket toilet aka humanure. the book is on the
internet. The grey/black water set up, since in Texas all kitchen water
is considered black water, is similar to this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBMpaWq4EKE

We wanted systems that we can build ourselves and that are financially
responsible. Also, that we can repair ourselves. Like most people on
this list, we are monetarily challenged. We also wanted a system that
the county won't complain about.

RE: [papercreters] Thanks to each of you in your support. It means so much. Permission from Mods (Not a money making venture, but educational)

I know things can get discouraging especially when you have worked so hard and are tired beyond belief. Sometimes it helps to take a little break. I remember when my husband an I were building 25 or so years ago. We were such workaholics! When it all got to be too much we would take a couple of days and go to a nearby motel, one with a pool and hot tub. We took our favorite beverages, ate at restaurants and slept a large percentage of time. I'm so thankful my mother was closeby and could stay with the kids (the last 2 were born during the building process). One of our favorite getaways was taking a watercolor workshop in Santa Fe. We were really able to get our minds on something different --- and we ended up with a couple of nice paintings. Now I am on my own and building with papercrete. I have a lot of help from friends but still have to be careful not to get too intense.

I would say maybe you need a little treat. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing candidly. All of this experience whether positive or otherwise is very helpful to all of us.

Too much stress in my life right now.

Kids can drain a mom in short order.

The thought of finally having lights at night,  or using a mixer is beyond exciting.

Creating something out if nothing takes far too much time, effort and energy.
Our learning curve on Earthbag building has been brutal.
When we lost a 19 ft wall last fall we were crushed emotionally,  no one was injured, but my husband and teen were heart broken.

So when Spaceman says it is horrible to see your sprayed wall slide to the ground,  we know the feeling.

I wanted to papercrete the bag walls, but hubby has been using our clay/sand soil to make adobe crate.

It is so labor intensive with a little concrete mixer, hauling water and running a genie for hours.

We are hoping that our rather mild winter means that the plastic covered walls and the covered adobe crete walls are standing and remain stable.

Labor intensive beyond belief.

It took about 1/4 second for yahoo to find 243 messages in the group archives that mention sawdust.

OK, time to bite this thread off and move on to papercrete in a new thread. There is nothing more to be gained here, and becoming argumentative is counter productive. Right behind spam, flame wars are not allowed here.

Brian, please re ask your question below (the on topic one about papercrete) in a new subject, please.

Strange that this is the only group that had objected.

I still haven't heard from the other moderators, and meanwhile there has been more discussion than would probably have happened if the information had just been posted. I believe a short note explaining the opportunity and with his contact information might be of interest to at least some group members. Our group policy includes things like "electrical, plumbing, HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning), roofing, windows, and other aspects of construction are all important factors open to discussion. " and solar/wind power would fall under that. It's not like this is a commercial venture trying to scam money, it is something that Calle wanted to share with the group, that some members may be interested in. I make similar offers from time to time - I always have openings for apprentices who would like to trade work for education. Way back when, I discussed this with the group founder and he had no objection to such posts - rather welcomed them as an opportunity for group members.

It is regretful that this whole discussion even happened. I'm sure Calle would approach this off list next time, rather than expose herself. You gotta give her credit for trying to make sure. This list has been really slow lately and when people get bored they will grab anything.

As far as this list not being "private", nothing you do online is private. Google has bots (and many others do) that crawl the internet constantly and sift through all the data. All communications are filtered and processed. If you want privacy then give away your computer and put your cell phone in a grounded metal box.

Beyond that, this group is echoed to another website purposely so that there is another copy for when Yahoo pulls the rug out from under us. It is backup of the information that has been given to this group. We are also tied to a youtube group dedicated to papercrete.

Maybe your inquiry would be better off list with the owner?  You seem to be going about gaining permission to spam in a strange around about way.

Thanks Spaceman for the note on why our messages are other places, never thought about "yahoo", pulling the plug,  very smart of you guys.

You are so correct, won't ever approach this group again.

I will try to get your email and Judith addresses in my address book.

Thanks for all of your work.

Wish the couple who have gotten so far on their house would post again.

Later,

Calle

OK, first off - I'm not the leader, I'm just one of the janitors around here. The list owner, Slurry Guy or Jay Hawk, has been MIA for a couple of years. Re: [papercreters] Spraying mixes for wet/dry continental extreme climates

I did quite a bit of sprayed papercrete about ten years ago. It works very well and you can build up a pretty good thickness before it slides off. You should have a surface with some teeth so the pc can get a grip. The old TIG siding would probably work if it has shrunk to the point of widening the cracks so pc can penetrate. If you don't remove the vinyl, you might want to put some chicken wire on first. It is really disappointing to spend hours building up a wall and then see it all slump to the ground. The ferrocement folks use a corrugated chicken wire that is ideal. They make it with two rollers that look like Gatling guns, rolling ridges into the wire. A rented sprayer should not have problems with your mix as long as it is well pulped without lumps.

For a thin coat you will want plenty of portland cement, maybe even up to 2:1 cement:paper.
