Re: [papercreters] Fallout shelter

A ceramicrete or grancrete render coat?both are magnesium concretes i
think, developed for sequestration of radioactive waste (sigh) render
coat ,maybe on th inside so th water that the papercrete absorbed
could still evaporate as magnesium concrete is impermeable being
chemically bonded 'ceramic' as i understand. ventilation would be
critical-a problen i am struggling with re fire shelters as well. i
have some trouble understanding how to deal with th papercretes
hydrophylia tho in my experiments so far no problems have arisen and i
do love the way the concrete surface feels when there is paper pulp in
th mix!

[papercreters] Re: Looking for a new place to call home.

I have 6) 5 acre parcels that I would not mind letting a few go to worthy people who want to do alternative building :) I wanted to settle the area with 5 other families of similar ideas. Off grid, earth friendly housing...

Actual pics of the property and area

https://picasaweb.google.com/georgeberz/Tx?feat=directlink

In pictures you will see a gate and a school bus stop on paved road about 1 mile north of the property on the dirt trail. There is no power phone or water on the property, but I have spoken with the telephone company and they will put up a pole on the property for $25 and start service and DSL is avail via microwave there also from them!

If you'd like to look over the area in google earth here are the approx coordinates of my 6) 5 acre parcels.

31.760267, -105.449715

I think I'd take $2k for 5 acres +

There are building codes in TX however there are no county inspectors in Hudspeth and no building permit fees or plan check fees to build any kind of house. Septic does have to have a permit. prop tax is cheap, like $30 ish a year...

I wanted to do underground monolithic domes or 1/2 underground and 1/2 above ground and papercrete for insulation.... ahhhh one of these days :)

Re: [papercreters] Re: Looking for a new place to call home.

well we are interested in looking at any properties in west Texas, New mexico, and Arizona that are in Papercrete friendly areas, So anyone who knows or has some good price land just drop me a email with your location and details of the land and a number to call you when we get in the area so we can view it. Also anyone haveing any papercrete or alternative building projects that they don't mind showing us we would love to get your contact info and see if we can stop by and see your project. we will be dooing a road trip from Florida through the southern states to end up in cali through the month of May trying to find property and hopefully seeing some alternative building ideas and meeting new people.

Thanks!

I have 2 lots in Cochise Co. that i'm buying and that I would let go of for $10,000 cash they're adjoining lots totaling approx. +/- 8.89 acres. This price would include having the title put in  your name. The lots are Cochise County Club Ranches #1 Lots 19,20. As far as permits for building goes I was quoted $605 for all permits, under the opt-out program RU-4.

The county building and planning division in Cochise County, Arizona embraces alternative building with an opt-out plan. Basically for $500 you opt out of all building codes and inspections except for septic and set backs (size of building and distance to easements, roads, etc.) Land where I am is about $750 an acre for unimproved property and goes up if if it has a well, power pole, etc. Certain areas of the county allow the opt-out plan, other areas don't. The elevation ranges between 3,500 and 5,000 feet elevation, its in the extreme SE corner of the state near Mexico and New Mexico.

Re: [papercreters] Fallout shelter

"High density concrete gives a composite shield for both neutron and gamma radiation. High density aggregates are the key ingredient in high density concrete. The most common aggregates used to achieve the required densities are Hematite (Fe2O3), Ilmenite (FeO TiO2), Magnetite (Fe3O4) and Steel Aggregate."

Of course none of that heavy stuff is normally in pc. According to Wikipedia,

Material Halving Thickness, inches Halving Thickness, cm Density, g/cm³ Halving Mass, g/cm²
lead 0.4 1.0 11.3 12
concrete 2.4 6.1 3.33 20
steel 0.99 2.5 7.86 20
packed soil 3.6 9.1 1.99 18
water 7.2 18 1.00 18
lumber or other wood 11 29 0.56 16
air 6000 15000 0.0012 18

Wood falls pretty low on the shielding scale, needing 11 inches to equal 2.4 inches of concrete or 3.6" of packed soil. Assuming that pc might fall somewhere between wood and concrete would indicate that a foot of papercrete might be equal to 1/2" of lead. Keeping in mind about assuming, and the fact that I'm not a nukular nginear, YMMV

Now a foot of papercrete bermed with a few feet of packed soil might do nicely as a fallout shelter. What I'm seeing on the news from Japan is that the biggest problem so far is contamination of the food and water supplies. They are telling the public that it is ok to consume small quantities, but you have to drink a lot of water to stay alive. I wonder how papercrete would work as a filter to remove fallout?

Hi

In 2008 I was looking for place where I could build with unconventional building materials & methods.

I found land in somerset Texas. The type of land is called unrestricted (no codes). It seems that most of the unrestricted land is more then 10 AC (like 15 & up).

In 2008 for about 80K I was able to get about 19.8 AC

No house, has water, well, electricity, one ont out building.

Re: [papercreters] Re: Looking for a new place to call home. - PC Shrinkage

I'm living in a small dome covered with pc. I first attached 3" thick pc panels to the frame, sealing the seams with pc. Now I'm in the midst of slip forming a 12"+ thick shell on the outside. It has been slow because I have too many things to distract me, but I'm up about seven feet all around so far. Papercrete does shrink, but it does so in all directions. The outside gets smaller, the inside gets larger, as the thickness lessens. I have had no cracking problems on this project, and can't even see seams between the different pour layers. Even pouring on top of a wall that has been untouched for months, there is no visible seam.

[papercreters] Re: Looking for a new place to call home.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but unless the inspectors in your area are really stupid or incompetent, this will not fly. Once you submit your engineered drawing, they will make sure the project is done exactly according to the approved plans. Especially with an unusual building like a monolithic dome there will be a lot of attention from the building department. If you start deviating from the plan you will be shut down quickly. What has to comply with the code is the final building. The plan is just your proposed method of reaching that compliance. They will be inspecting the building for final approval and issuance of a certificate of occupancy, and they will be looking at your original plans as they do that. This will not be the only time they will look at your job, several inspections are done during progress so the inspectors can see things that will later be covered up.

Finding an engineer that will sign off on major changes to a plan will cost as much or more than it would have to hire the engineer in the first place to design what you want. Good luck finding one who will approve shotcrete on burlap. Another problem might be shooting right through the burlap. All the guns I've seen have a lot of power to throw concrete several feet and when it hits, it hits hard. You need to be shooting onto a strong surface. Wire mesh on rebar would work, burlap might not.

Papercrete between two layers of concrete is asking for trouble. It won't breath, will have no way to dry, and will probably mold. It will remain damp and not provide much insulation value.

So, IMHO, it's a lead balloon.

Use re-bar to build the dome around the doors, windows, and chimneys and stacks. Cover it with burlap. Use a air compressor and thrash pump to shot crete the whole thing. Maybe 2 feet at a time allowing it to dry to add strength. Now get someone to spray one or two inches of polyurethane on top of that. Then 10 inches of papercrete on top of that. [papercreters] Re: Looking for a new place to call home.

When you put 10 inches of papercrete on the outside of a dome, is there significant shrinkage? I understand that the more sand you put in, the less it will shrink. Does it crack? Does it pull down nice and snug? I'm planning to do a ferrocement dome with papercrete insulation on the outside and I'm curious if it will work. Where we're building, there are no building codes.

I am in south Texas and all around for hundreds of miles you can build with PC.  property around the small towns is around 2,000 an acre.  A very large amount of oil field work is starting up here from new finds. Michael

There are vast areas of west Texas that are uninspected. While these areas technically fall under state codes, there is no enforcement (other than septic tanks). I live in such an area, in papercrete.

A friend just bought 30 acres near Cornudas for a couple of hundred dollars an acre. Financing? A couple of grand will buy ten acres. He found his through ebay.

I have heard that papercrete can be permitted in Silver City, NM though the one project that I am familiar with was a disaster for other reasons.

Re: [papercreters] Looking for a new place to call home.

Greetings,
Organic vegetables are a hard sell in this area. Houston will gobble up
all you can grow, though at a good price. If you don't mind driving
there once a week, they have great, year round markets. We did this for
a few years, but with MCS, the pollution of Houston was affecting my
health too much. It is slow going to get a CSA going, but we are
persevering and it is growing. The south end of the county is not a bad
drive to Houston, being 45 minutes closer, but watch out for local deed
restrictions. It is also more expensive. There is not a lot of variety
in employment here. Mostly the mushroom plant and the jail system.
Good, honest welders are in sharp demand by the ranchers. Self employed
works well here. Worth a look. If you want more info, contact me off list.
