[papercreters] Expanded Metal Lathe -was- Re: ] PC / FC hybrid structures

Expanded metal lathe is flexible metal sheet material that has been
cut in small regular intervals and stretched. It is a common
material for reinforcing stucco.

Here is a web site that shows some pictures:

I am NOT endorsing this company. I don't know anything about them,
actually. They were the first website I found that had pictures that
would help you see what it is.

No. Lathe is NOT REQUIRED to work with papercrete. However if you
are planning on building a house or any other building, you will use
many materials in the structure. Plumbing, electrical, Furnace, AC,
Windows, etc. won't be made of papercrete. You might CHOOSE to use
something like lathe as part of your structure or not. It depends
upon what you are building and what you are trying to accomplish.

Mikey Sklar is using a construction technique that is a combination
of papercrete and ferrocement. The lathe is an excellent choice to
use when making ferrocement. The way he is incorporating it will
allow it to act as a formwork mold for his papercrete. It's a slick
idea. Personally I can't wait to see pictures (or maybe even video)
of his papercrete pour when it happens. It should be fun to see his
armature fill up.

This does NOT mean that it is the only way to build a structure. If
you look at the videos on our YouTube site:
http://www.youtube.com/groups_videos?name=papercreters
You will see Judith Williams using papercrete blocks like bricks. No
metal lathe required.

Neither technique is right, wrong, better, or worse. Both methods
for using papercrete are equally valid. They are simply different.
There are more methods of using papercrete than these two also.

Each method or technique has advantages and disadvantages. It's up
to each builder to decide what is best for his or her situation.

Hope this helps.
